The cathedral city of Chichester, nestled between the white sandy beaches of West Wittering and the stunning South Downs, is simply idyllic. It’s the perfect getaway, but why not stay?
Under the Spotlight
Located on England’s south west coast, Chichester is West Sussex’s sole city. Luckily it has enough charm for the whole county! Chichester’s desirable location, coupled with its unique blend of history and culture, make it an attractive prospect for those looking to escape to the country, while retaining the amenities of a city. The best of both worlds. For families, the excellent schools are the icing on the cake.
Surrounded by original Roman walls, the largely pedestrianised Georgian city centre has been well preserved and is dominated by the famous 900-year-old Chichester Cathedral. The market cross sits at the heart of the city, with an impressive mix of independent and mainstream shops and eateries in the surrounding streets.
Chichester is very well connected. To the south of the city, the A27, connecting Eastbourne with Southampton, joins to the M27, M3 and M275, while Chichester station offers regular services to Brighton, Littlehampton, Portsmouth and Southampton. The journey to London Victoria takes 90 minutes, while London Gatwick is just an hour away. Portsmouth International Port is also conveniently within a 30-minute drive, with ferry services to France, Spain and the Channel Islands.
The property market in Chichester is vibrant and varied, with some great new developments popping up to meet the demand for more affordable homes. The entire centre is a conservation area, and the house prices obviously reflect this, with North, South, East and West Pallant, off South Street, offering some of the most desirable homes in the city. If period properties are your thing, you’re in luck – the streets around the city boast Grade II listed Georgian townhouses and terraces with period features including sash windows. Head out of the city for more reasonable prices. In the suburbs, you’ll find more 1930s and post-war homes in addition to modern builds.
It is also worth exploring the villages around Chichester, to identify areas that suit your lifestyle and budget. Summersdale, about a mile north of the city centre, is popular for its green spaces, while Fishbourne, to the west, offers a rural setting with easy access to the harbour. Tangmere, to the east, is best known for its historical community spirit. Woodgate is another gem with everything you need – a supermarket, Post Office, friendly pub (serving an excellent Sunday roast!), community centre and gym, all with the peace and quiet you would expect from its rural setting.

Out and About
Chichester’s shopping scene has bucked the national trend – its quaint high street remains a buzzing hub. Alongside the standard high street stores, you will find a plethora of high-quality independent businesses. At the heart of any market town is a market, and Chichester’s is an excellent one, held every Wednesday and Saturday morning. Chichester Farmers’ Market is held fortnightly, and traders must grow, rear or bake their own goods and be based within a 30-mile radius of the city.
Chichester residents are spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants. While the obvious choice might be to head to a country pub, there are plenty of international options too. Franco Manca is a popular choice for pizzas and Jungle Junction is a must-visit for Indian lovers.
The best way to get to know the city is by following the city walls walk – Chichester’s Roman walls were built 1,800 years ago and, with 80% of the structure still standing, are the most intact in Southern England. From there, head to Chichester Cathedral – it has a rich history and boasts original features, juxtaposed with modern artwork by John Piper and Marc Chagall.
You will want to explore the unspoilt natural beauty that surrounds Chichester. The South Downs National Park is on the doorstep, covering 1,600 sq km across to the white cliffs of the Seven Sisters. Or head to Chichester Harbour; this designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has 55,000 birds visiting its saltmarsh and mudflats. The sandy dunes of West Wittering are a joy to behold, and having them on the doorstep means you can beat the crowds! You are also in the perfect spot here to enjoy outdoor pursuits. Clubs such as Chichester Yacht Club have a busy calendar of events.
More of a spectator? Head to The Goodwood Estate. Famous for its thrilling sporting events including the Festival of Speed and the Qatar Goodwood Festival, it also boasts an organic farm, four restaurants, two 18-hole golf courses, a private members’ club, a health club, a hotel, and even an aerodrome, all set within 12,000 acres of stunning countryside!
Chichester is big on culture. From The Novium, a museum built above the remains of a Roman bath house, to the Chichester Festival Theatre which hosts large-scale musical and theatrical productions. The Pallant Gallery also runs workshops throughout the year for both children and adults, using themes of current artists showing in the gallery.
